Selection Processes and Entrance Exams Explained

The Okayama University Medical School selects applicants through the following admissions processes.
To study at the Okayama University Medical School and obtain a medical degree, a high level of Japanese proficiency is required.

General Selection (First Round)

Basic Policy:
Applicants are required to take the Common Test for University Admissions, covering six subjects and eight topics, to assess foundational academic skills at the high school graduate level. Additionally, an individual academic examination will be given, covering mathematics, two science subjects, and a foreign language (English), to evaluate applicants’ understanding of subjects essential for studying medicine. An interview will also be conducted to comprehensively assess each applicant’s suitability for a future role in medicine and healthcare.

School Recommendation Selection II (Requiring the Common Test for University Admissions)

Basic Policy:
Applicants are recruited and selected under a regional quota system. Eligible applicants who meet the requirements for their desired prefecture will undergo a review of submitted documents, including a transcript, and an interview. This process confirms the applicant’s intent to accept a prefectural scholarship and to work in the healthcare field within the designated prefecture. Additionally, applicants must take the Common Test for University Admissions (covering six subjects and eight topics) and must meet a minimum score (approximately 820 points) to proceed with selection.

International Baccalaureate Selection

Basic Policy:
This selection process is for applicants who hold an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma and have achieved the specified grades. Document screening is conducted to assess their foundational academic skills at the high school graduate level and understanding of subjects fundamental to the study of medicine. An interview is also conducted to comprehensively evaluate each applicant’s aptitude for a future role in medicine and healthcare.

Second-Year Transfer (Bachelor’s Degree Holders)

Basic Policy:
This selection process is open to individuals holding a bachelor’s degree who meet the university’s specified eligibility requirements. Document screening (including TOEFL iBT scores) and an essay assignment are used to assess logical thinking and understanding of the life sciences. Additionally, an academic examination in biology and scientific English is conducted to evaluate the applicant’s comprehension of subjects essential for studying medicine. An interview will also be conducted to comprehensively evaluate the applicant’s aptitude for a future role in medicine and healthcare.

Selection for Self-Financed International Students

Basic Policy:
This selection is for applicants who meet the university’s eligibility requirements for international students. Applicants are required to undergo document screening and take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), which covers Japanese language, mathematics (Course 2), biology, and one other science subject, to assess their foundational academic skills at the high school graduate level. Additionally, an individual academic examination will be conducted covering mathematics, two science subjects, and a foreign language (English) to evaluate applicants’ understanding of subjects essential for studying medicine. An interview will also be conducted to comprehensively evaluate each applicant’s suitability for a future role in medicine and healthcare.
